Student Body President Brandon Rahn nominated junior accounting major Sarah McPike and sophomore political science major Mark Schmidt to the senate at the Student Government meeting on Friday.

McPike and Schmidt are replacements for two of the three senators, who are no longer on the Student Senate. The three senators no longer in SG are Dharmesh Balar, Tiffany Leschke and Jatin Patel.

Neither Balar nor Patel had enough credit hours to remain senators; all SG members are required to be full time students, according to Student Government secretary Bonnie Farrin.

McPike and Schmidt both sat in on the meeting, officially as senators, once Rahn swore them in. McPike jumped into the open forum discussion concerning the Resident and Commuter Life Committee, finding what she saw as flaws in the self-conducted survey Nolan Sharkey presented.

Residence Housing Association President Max Orris, junior business major Nolan Sharkey and sophomore political science major Jacob Manuel approached SG during open forum to address issues they had with the Resident and Commuter Life Senate Committee. The senate approved Senate Bill 10-09-01, which eliminates the option of write-in candidates for SG elections. The bill required that Rahn brought it up at the SG meeting on Jan. 22, but the senate could not vote on it until Friday.

One program request was approved for the Indian Student Association's "India Week 2010 and India Night 2010" for the amount of $6,667.75

The Student Senate approved two travel requests, both for the full amount of $675. Wagner Potter's Association will attend its National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference in Pennsylvania; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will attend its Central Regional Conference in Indiana.

The travel request for the Gay-Straight Alliance to attend the Midwest Bisexual Gay Lesbian Transgender Ally College Conference did not pass, with the main reason, cited by Senator Andrew Mossman, being that GSA did not get their travel request to SG 45 days prior to the trip.

McPike, treasurer for GSA, said the conference "reinvigorates your group," when making her case to the senate.

"I knew that we didn't submit it in 45 days, so that is something that I knew was a possibility going into it," McPike said.

GSA Vice President JP La Bruyere said GSA has been fundraising in order to go, but not receiving the funding from SG will require more effort on their part. La Bruyere and McPike said they will still attend the conference.

The Student Senate approved two constitution reviews. SIUE now has The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and men's Club Basketball.

Internal Affairs Officer Sarah Bailey made the following appointments to SG committees: Committee for Higher Administration Performance Appraisal, Shennell Rowe; Election Commission, Rebecca Norris and Tobi Drilling; External Affairs Committee, Jeremy Flowers.

The next Student Government meeting is at 2 p.m. Friday in the Goshen Lounge of the Morris University Center.
