A year after the crash, which took the lives of two SIUE alumni, their memory will affect the lives of future SIUE students.
Sue Zimmer, Adam's mother, will host a trivia night Feb. 27 to raise money for scholarships in honor of Adam Zimmer, Lindsey Arnold and their unborn child. The money raised from the event will be split into two scholarships, one in honor of Adam and the other in honor of Lindsey and Riley, their child.
The couple was driving to a hockey game when a drunk driver struck their car on Feb. 21, 2009.
The funds generated from the trivia tables and the silent auction will be split in half and will reflect Adam and Lindsey's majors at SIUE. One will go to a special education major, Adam's major, and one will go to an English major, which was Lindsey's field of study. Zimmer said they will look at applicants' service record's and GPA's, in addition to the major requirement, to determine who will be awarded the scholarships.
Zimmer said both Adam and Lindsey were caring and generous people and setting up the scholarships was just a reflection of their how they lived their lives.
"He had a passion for helping people," Zimmer said of Adam. "Adam and Lindsey were very giving people. We wanted to continue that so they could always be remembered that way."
Zimmer said she wasn't sure how successful the event would be, but it was apparent early on how many people Adam and Lindsey touched in their lives. The 50 tables available for the event were booked less than two weeks after the initial message was sent out.
"We sold out in 10 days," Zimmer said. "The first couple of days I wasn't so sure … but we have a waitlist now."
The silent auction will also contribute to the total amount earned for the scholarships. Zimmer said more than 30 businesses have contributed baskets that will be auctioned off, and there will also be a 50/50 raffle in support of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
"We've had quite a good turnout," Zimmer said. "People have sent in checks that knew Adam that I didn't even know."
Lindsey was also involved with organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega.
Vice President of Service for APO Andrea Thies said the fraternity was helping out by playing one of the tables and was also selling shirts that read "APO against drunk driving." The proceeds of the shirt sales will also go toward the scholarship fund.
The build-up to the trivia night has been tougher to deal with than she expected, but Zimmer said she hopes to continue the event in the future.
"It's been more difficult than we thought, as we're doing this one week after the anniversary," Zimmer said.
The trivia night will be at 6 p.m. at Granite City Township Hall. Those looking to make a donation to the scholarship fund or for more information can contact Zimmer at 973-9236.
