Former SIUE student dies in farming accident

A former SIUE student died after being trapped in a grain bin Thursday.
On a farm one mile north of Sigel, Thomas Michael Ordner, 22, along with two other workers, was working inside a large grain bin when he became trapped in the corn, according to Shelby County Coroner Brian Green. Green pronounced him dead at 5:15 p.m. Sigel is just north of Effingham.
Ordner was enrolled in the fall as a construction major, but was not taking classes this semester, according to Director of Public Affairs Greg Conroy.
There were several emergency responders to the scene, including an Air Evac LifeTeam helicopter.
Investigation into the incident is ongoing and an autopsy will be performed at Springfield Memorial Hospital.
