SIUE impressive at U of I meet

The SIUE track and field team saw strong performances and several new school records in the Carle/Health Alliance Classic on Saturday. The University of Illinois hosted the event in Champaign.

Senior distance runner Kayla Brown set a new personal best in the women's 3,000-meter run with her time of 10 minutes, 1.92 seconds. Her second place finish also broke Brown's own school record in the event.

Senior jumper Megan Dennis broke a school record of her own in the pentathlon with 3,003 points. Her performance also led her to a third place finish.

Sophomore distance runner Aftan Noon had a strong performance with a second place finish in the 800-meter run at 2:18.90. Later in the meet, Noon set a personal record in the mile crossing the line at 5:12.81.

In the throws, senior Breanna Branson threw 40 feet, 10.25 inches in the shot put, placing seventh. Branson also placed sixth in the weight throw, a spot behind teammate senior Jennie Satterle, who placed fifth.

SIUE finished seventh of nine competing schools in the team rankings with 37 points. Host school Illinois won the event with their score of 154 points. The Fighting Illini men also secured the team-high honors with their score of 279.

Surged by strong performances from junior thrower Ben Bishop, SIUE finished with 36 team points. Bishop won the men's weight throw with a toss of 65 feet, 1.25 inches.

In the men's triple jump, sophomore Maurice Jackson and junior Andrew Thierry placed second and third respectively. Jackson leaped 46 feet, 4 inches with Thierry right behind him at 44-5.25.

In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the team of senior Marcus Evans, senior Alphonso Sheperd, sophomore Marc Presley and sophomore Jesse Holliger finished with a time of 3:24.98. Their time placed the team in the fifth spot for the event.

Now midway through the indoor season, the Cougar track squad will head to Charleston next weekend to take part in the Illinois Intercollegiate hosted by Eastern Illinois University.
