New committee and resource center coming soon

After much deliberation, Student Government approved Senator Joel Durham's bill to create a Resident and Commuter Life Senate Committee at the meeting on Friday. The senate also approved three program requests, two constitution reviews and elected a new Election commissioner.
The Resident and Commuter Life Senate Committee will work with Student Government in addressing student concerns regarding issues both on and off campus, such as accessing campus services off campus.
Senator Steven Robinson-Holman said he did not approve of the bill because there is already a liaison between Student Government and the Residence Housing Association.
According to Durham, the committee will work with RHA.
Senator Chase Newson-Jones said Durham's bill, Senate Bill 10-09-02, is meant to work with, not against, RHA.
"We're all trying to work together for the same effect," Newson-Jones said.
Durham said meetings for the committee will be held at the students' convenience. That way, a student who is presenting is available.
During open forum, junior Nolan Sharkey approached Student Government in opposition of Durham's bill.
"I don't really see how this would help the commuters," Sharkey said.
Senator Mary Clabaugh said the committee could, for example, help commuters with off-campus access to the Lovejoy Library's online resources.
Student Body President Brandon Rahn appointed Brian McCloud as the new Election commissioner. McCloud said he came to SIUE in the fall of 2009 and has worked in the military and for Homeland Security. He said he will put aside affiliations with other individuals and organizations in order to do his job.
"Fairness supersedes my opinion of them," McCloud said.
Rahn introduced Senate Bill 10-09-01, which would remove the option of write-in candidates for Student Government positions. The bill requires an amendment, meaning that it must be read at one meeting and voted on at the next. Write in candidates aren't required to attend the meeting for Senate candidates before the election.

Sounds to me that Student Government is trying to control something out of their jurisdiction. Housing does not receive money from Student Government, students pay student activity fees and HOUSING RESIDENTS pay a housing fee that funds housing activities. (Continued…)

I completely agree with Campus Resident! I do not want non University Housing residents determining my policies, rates, etc.
I think there are 2 really huge things being over looked here. (Continued…)

As someone who has lived in housing I can honestly say that I have never gone to an RHA meeting.I can also say that as a student here I have never gone to a student government meeting. (Continued…)

Student Government is granted authority by the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees to "function cooperatively with other constituent bodies to achieve the mission and purpose of the University" (Article I of the Student Government constitution). (Continued…)

As a residential student, I feel SIUE Housing is fantastic. All of the staff are friendly and make living in housing an enjoyable experience. What I don't understand is which students made these complaints about housing to Student Government? If these DID occur, Student Government should have directed the students to RHA, not suddenly form a committee without any prior notice. (Continued…)

What a pointless attempt for Student Government to become relevant again. It truly doesn't matter what this committee feels like, they cannot change housing policies. (Continued…)

I can't agree more with Campus Resident and Cougar 509 Resident.
What SG is doing here is, in my opinion, not only unnecessary but out of line and unacceptable. (Continued…)

I think some of the people posting on this site are severely misinformed about the actions SG has taken. The one student posting as Rahn Direction, seems to have some personal vendetta against SG and specifically President Rahn. (Continued…)

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that President Rahn is taking such horrendous step up power that many would consider abuses of power. (Continued…)

One thing that people seem to be forgetting is the fact that, even if this committee was in fact in the best interest of Housing residents, the committee has no power anyway! University Housing does NOT answer to student government, and creating this committee won't change that. (Continued…)
