The village of Summerfield phoned SIUE and asked for help building a playground. They were put in touch with the Constructors Club who volunteered their time to help with the project.

Senior construction management major Tyler Doughty of Bellville is vice president of the Constructors Club and one of the students who donated their time to the construction of the playground.

Doughty said the Constructors Club has been around for a while, but the length of time has not increased its notoriety. However, he said the playground project is a good way to get their name out, he just did not realize the amount of work it would be.

"It's kind of funny," Doughty said. "We didn't know what we were getting into when we became officers."

Senior construction management major Garth Hand of Freeburg is secretary of the Constructors Club. He also gave up his weekend to help build the playground for Summerfield.

"It's a pre-fabricated playground," Hand said. "It has taken quite a few guys in the club to organize this, as well as our department head."

Chris Gordon is a professor in the construction department and the club's adviser. Gordon said the club has done a great job organizing the project.

"It is no small feat what they have done," Gordon said. "I'm impressed by what they have done so far."

Summerfield originally needed SIUE's help due to the fact that the playground was composed of pieces too complicated for anyone in the village to put together. As a result, they looked to SIUE to have people with the expertise needed for the project, and they got the Constructors Club.

Group members studied the owner's manual that came with the playground before they began working on it, according to Hand. They had to decide how many people they needed for the project and what needed to be done.

The club took about 17 members with them, and Summerfield had about 12 volunteers, according to Hand. The group members also used their own tools, although the village of Summerfield did provide the machinery that was needed to complete the project.
