The newest version of the SIUE women's golf team opened up their season this past weekend playing in the Western Illinois University Autumn Invitational.
The Cougars are hoping to use their two veteran seniors and a young group of underclassmen to propel them to the top of the scorecard this season.
The results were fair all around as the first tournament of the year showcased the competitive schedule the team will be faced with all year. WIU won their hosted event overall, and SIUE placed sixth out of nine teams.
Senior Sarah Gereaux led the team with a combined score of 158, placing third overall and five strokes behind eventual winner Claire Gursh from Western Illinois University.
"The first day I didn't do as well as I'd like. I had a couple holes that didn't go so well for me," Gereaux said. "The second day went better, but I still had a few holes that I could have made better shots, or hit putts, so there is definitely still a lot of room for improvement."
Sophomore Courtney Lovegreen, who shot a 170 during the two-day event, secured a 26th place finish overall. Freshman Taylor Rumple (175), Freshman Brooke Hood (181) and Freshman Hilary Powles (183), rounded out SIUE's performance.
"I think with this first tournament, some of the freshmen were nervous because they had never played in something like this before," Gereaux said. "We definitely need to work on some things and fine-tune some of the things we didn't do so well this past week," she said.
The Cougars will strive for a better finish at their next match in Springfield, Mo., where they will participate in the Missouri State/Payne Stewart Memorial.
"As we play in more tournaments, I think that some of the younger girls will start to play better, and as a team, we will play better," Gereaux said.
