The landscape around SIUE provides a great backdrop when walking on campus, but for those without a car, the surroundings may look rather confining.

Luckily, those who are without a vehicle of their own can get to downtown Edwardsville and other local businesses for only a dollar, thanks to bus service provided by Madison County Transit.

The company provides service for students looking to travel just about anywhere in the area, including as close as Wal-Mart and as far away as St. Louis.

MCT provides numerous busses that stop at SIUE to help students reach their destination.

S.J. Morrison, MCT director of marketing and planning, suggested riding the number 17 bus with its newly created route to get a taste of what Edwardsville has to offer.

"I would encourage students to ride the 17 to downtown Edwardsville," said Morrison. "It also provides a way to Kohl's, Dierbergs, and Wal-Mart as well."

Morrison said the number 17 bus is changing their former route to run into Edwardsville as the 16 bus no longer runs through campus as it did last year.

If students need a ride to commute, or want to go to a nearby city, MCT has trips to Granite City, Alton, Troy, Collinsville, and Maryville for $1.50 one way. Those looking to travel to St. Louis can take the number 18 to the Metro for $3.00. From there the Metro can provide service to almost anywhere in the city.

MCT offers free on-campus service, including busses traveling from the apartments in Cougar Village to Peck Hall every ten minutes throughout the day. They also stop at Child Care every half hour and at textbook services on request.

Senior civil engineering major Nate Clarey said he lives in Cougar Village and appreciates the free service they provide from his apartment to campus.

"The service is good," Clarey said. "They could use one more bus early in the day since they are so packed, but they do a good job for the most part."

There are several perks the busses themselves offer as well. All of the 40-foot long busses, which include those traveling on-campus, provide free Wi-Fi for riders. There are also bike racks on the front of the busses for cyclists.
