Campus Activities Board's annual Springfest will take a Vegas twist this year with its theme of "Welcome to Sin City" - in Edwardsville, that is.
This year CAB is co-sponsoring a Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament, which will take place at 7 p.m. in the Student Fitness Center. According to Assistant Director of Student Life Michelle Welter, students who want to play can register at the event.
Senior speech communications major Tiffany Leschke of Edwardsville is the student chair for Springfest.
"It is definitely off a Vegas theme," Leschke said. "We will have activities like building a house of cards and a poker tournament."
Welter said Springfest is one of the longest running traditions at SIUE.
"It is a great way to celebrate the end of the semester for all students, faculty and staff," Welter said.
One of the traditional activities is the giant banana split, so large it takes an unusual container to hold it all.
"For this event, we get a full-sized canoe that we cover with plastic and then fill with all the traditional banana split ingredients," Welter said.
The last event of Springfest is Party at the Park, which is another ongoing tradition at SIUE sponsored by CAB.
There are two bands that will be playing live music, one band from Chicago, and the other is a local band from Edwardsville. The event will run from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday in Edwardsville City Park at the Edwardsville Public Library. Welter said this event is the largest event of the week.
There is extra incentive for student organizations to take part in Springfest this year. One organization will win $500 from CAB. Each organization involved will earn points throughout the week, and at the end of the week the group with the most points wins, according to Leschke.
Sophomore Brittany Luehmann of Alpha Sigma Tau is part of CAB and will also help set up a table that will hand out snow cones as part of the Student Organization Activities Fair on Thursday.
Other activities include a chocolate eating contest, where the chocolate wrappers look like poker chips, and there is also a Vegas themed costume contest.
"Springfest brings everyone on campus onto the Quad," Luehmann said. "It's just a way to promote our organization."
Luehmann said all of the Greek organizations on campus are doing different activities during Springfest as well.
Springfest will take place Monday through Friday. For more information on Springfest, visit CAB's Web site at siue.edu/cab/springfest.
