Late night talk show host Jay Leno called Kathleen Madigan "one of America's funniest women," and sportscaster Bob Costas said she was "one of my favorite comedians."

Now the SIUE alumna Madigan returns to the university to entertain students as part of Campus Activities Board's Just for Laughs comedy series. Madigan is set to entertain at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Morris University Center's Meridian Ballroom, performing her family friendly comedy routine.

Madigan has traveled the United States doing her stand-up and earned herself the title of one of the best comedians in America. She realized her acting talent while attending classes at SIUE.

Madigan graduated with an undergraduate degree in journalism in 1987. Two years after graduating, she performed around the St. Louis area in comedy clubs and open-mic nights.

Then at the age of 24, she jumpstarted her professional comedian career and toured the Southern and Midwestern parts of the United States. In 1996, she landed the esteemed honor of "Best Female Comedian" award from the American Comedy Awards.

More recently, Madigan appeared on NBC's "Last Comic Standing" as a contestant in 2004 and judge in the following season. She also starred in the Comedy Central television series "Root of All Evil" with comedian Lewis Black, according to kathleenmadigan.com.

SIUE mass communications professor Riley Maynard said he admires what Madigan has accomplished.

"I don't remember her as a student, but I hold a lot of respect for her," Maynard said. "She's not offensive and never has been. She's one of the best out there and has the ability to connect with any audience."

In Madigan's comedy performing carrier she has produced two CDs. Her first CD was self-titled. On the CD she discusses topics ranging from politics to smoking, as well as traveling and religion. Madigan released another CD in 2006, "In Other Words."

Other teachers such as retired mass communications professor Celeysis Baker said she had Madigan in some of her classes and is proud she made it.

From SIUE to the big time, Madigan has made a name for herself. She performed on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." She also hosts her own weekly show on Sirius Radio Networks, "The Kathleen Madigan Show."

Junior nursing major Amanda Krisel said she enjoyed Madigan's comedy in the past.

"She has some really good material and is really funny to watch," Krisel said.

Senior biology and medical science major Dustin Robb said he was looking forward to the show.

"I'm very excited to see Kathleen Madigan this weekend at SIUE," Robb said.
