Mardi Gras is coming to SIUE early this year as Homecoming Week begins Monday with this year's theme, Cougar Gras.
"(Homecoming) is a chance where organizations and students can come together and show their pride in SIUE," Coordinator of Greek Life John Davenport said.
Davenport said Homecoming Week is a chance for students to compete in various activities, as well as show their school spirit.
"It's a chance where students can come together and show their school spirit and take pride in what their school is and doing, and we urge students to come out and show a strong participation in the events all week," Davenport said. ??
Homecoming events kick off with voting for the homecoming king and queen Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as the Golf Cart Parade at noon.
Voting continues on Tuesday, and Recliner Races will begin from noon to 1 p.m. The Recliner Races include various student organizations fixing up recliners to race around campus.
"The Recliner Races are one of my personal favorite events," Davenport said. "The creations that the students make are interesting, and the crashes are interesting, but overall, it's a really good time."
Events continue on Wednesday with live band karaoke and a Cougar Gras mask contest running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A pep rally and bonfire will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Woodland Hall, followed by the homecoming dance at 9 p.m. in Evergreen Hall.
Davenport said all the week's events are fun, but nothing compares to the overwhelming turnout for the soccer game Friday and the football game Saturday.
"The football and soccer games draw the biggest crowds," Davenport said. "Last year the soccer game was near 1,000 people, and the club football game was well over 1,000 people, but those are rough estimates."??
The SIUE men's soccer team will host the McKendree College Wildcats at 7 p.m. Friday at Korte Stadium, and SIUE Club Football will host Miami University at 1 p.m. Saturday at the SIUE Rec Plex. At 7 p.m., the homecoming king and queen will be announced.
Homecoming queen candidates are senior history major Theresa Baum from Mount Olive, senior nursing major Shannon Cain of Philo, junior criminal justice major Kaitlyn Jackson from Troy, senior kinesiology major Brittany Musick of Rockford and senior speech language pathology major Ashley Westbrooks of Greenville.
The homecoming king candidates are senior bio-medical sciences major Kolby Bissell of St. Elmo, junior mechanical engineering major Devin Heckenkemper from New Baden, junior biochemistry major Eric Hellrung of Troy and senior business major Corey Suelter of Peoria.
