For the first time, the School of Education will host the Art & Architecture House Tour and Art Auction on Sunday.
Christina Donsbach, director of development and alumni relations for the School of Education, said the event will give viewers an opportunity to view both local architecture and local art.
"We haven't done a fundraiser for a couple of years," Donsbach said.
Donsbach said her goal is to draw a large crowd bringing students, faculty, alumni and community members together. All proceeds will fund scholarships for students in the School of Education for use in student teaching and clinical semesters.
The auction will begin at 1 p.m. with a tour of five homes in the Edwardsville area, as well as the new Goshen Elementary School and Villa Marie Winery in Maryville. The house tour is loosely structured, allowing participants to view the houses when and in what order they prefer.
At 3 p.m. the reception and art auction will begin at the Edwardsville Arts Center. The event should end around 5:30 p.m.
Retired SIUE professor Dan Anderson will assist with the auction. Since he left SIUE 32 years ago, Anderson said he has volunteered at the Edwardsville Arts Center and said he is excited about donating his own art.
Some of his ceramic art, along with his wife's glass art, will appear in the silent auction. Anderson said anything to do with education is a great thing, and he likes that the proceeds will go to a scholarship fund.
Around 15 pieces have been donated to the cause so far, all from prominent local artists.
The Edwardsville Arts Center played a significant role in finding the artists and are also donating their facilities for the reception.
Participants will receive a commemorative event wine glass and will be able to sample wine from local vintners throughout the art auction.
Beth Weeks, administrative secretary for the School of Education, said some committee members knew the Edwardsville area quite well and knew friends who were willing to open their homes for the occasion.
Artists from the Edwardsville community, as well as SIUE students, will participate in the fundraiser. All of them were chosen on a volunteer basis.
Paintings, jewelry, glasswork, photographs and much more will all be available to bid on.
Senior Alyx Mark, a political science and environmental science major from Roxana, said she is donating her handcrafted jewelry to the cause.
Michelle Kreger, support associate for the School of Education, said if the event is successful, there may be more like it in the future.
"We've been planning this for several months. Hopefully it is successful enough that we can grow on it," Michelle Kreger of the School of Education said.
Tickets for the event cost $25 and can be purchased at the School of Education's Web site. They will also be available at the Edwardsville Arts Center the day of the tour and auction. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to at www.siue.edu/education/housetour
