The SIUE softball team welcomed in opponents Bellarmine University and Northern Kentucky University over the weekend. The Cougars swept the series against Bellarmine before gaining victories in both of the games against NKU.

The No. 13 Cougars improved their record to 28-7 overall and 10-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the four wins over the weekend. The four-game win streak puts the Cougars at second in the GLVC with only Lewis University above them in the standings with a record of 12-2 in conference play.

On Friday, the Cougars welcomed Bellarmine for a double header in which SIUE gained victories winning the first game 2-1 and the second game 5-1.

The first of the two game set was a tight match-up until senior first baseman Emily Lenart was singled home by freshman third baseman Lauren Zembruski in the home half of the fourth inning.

Bellarmine would then tie the game until junior shortstop Kaeleigh Rousey was sacrificed in for the go ahead run. The Cougars' victory went to sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Colosimo allowed only three hits during the game. Colosimo's overall record is now 13-2.

"I was really just concentrating on trying to stay loose since it was so cold," Colosimo said. "I just tried to pitch my normal game."

In the nightcap, the Cougars scored runs early. After putting up three runs in the first inning, the Cougars scored a run in both the second and the third innings putting them up by five early in the contest. Bellarmine scored a run in the sixth, but the Cougars held on defensively and gained the victory 5-1.

Senior pitcher Sabra McClune picked up her 11th victory of the season, bringing her overall record to 11-5.

"We could all barely feel our hands," sophomore second baseman Courtney Mall said about the cold conditions of this weekends games. "All of our pitchers did so well it was amazing."

Saturday, the Cougars took the field against Northern Kentucky University. The first game went extra innings as SIUE pulled out a 4-3 win in eight.

NKU led 3-1 after five innings.
