Being alone is not depressing when you are quirky

Valentine's Day is over. Pick up the pieces of your broken pride, drag yourself off the couch, toss out the empty Ben & Jerry's containers and get on with your life. Although the Hallmark-fueled holiday may have brought you down, being single isn't nearly as bad as you think.

So you don't have a significant other? Who cares?

Some of the most fulfilling relationships in life are with ourselves and our friends.

Sasha Cagen introduces the concept of loving yourself and your friends in her book, "Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics."

Let us examine the definition of quirkyalone. A QA is, "a person who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to being in a relationship) and generally prefers to be alone rather than date for the sake of being in a couple," Cagen said. "(They have) unique traits and an optimistic sprit; a sensibility that transcends relationship status."

Men, fear not. Quirkyalone has an equal-opportunity mentality.

Quirkyalone is a mind-set and a

way of life: anyone can be a quirkyalone.

Cagen said she came up with the concept of QA at a New Year's Eve party.

According to Cagen, as midnight approached, she was still without a recipient for her New Year's kiss.

She stopped and looked around.

"I saw something I hadn't seen before," Cagen said.

"I realized what I was looking at. A sea of people not kissing. In all my obsessive searching, I had never considered this possibility: a New Year's Eve party totally devoid of midnight kiss."

The next morning, standing at an ATM vestibule with her girlfriends, an epiphany hit.

"You know who we are? We're the quirkyalones!"

And through that spontaneous declaration, a movement was born.

"Quirkyalone stands for self-respect, independent spirit, creativity, true love and confidence," Cagen said.

True love? The idea of an individual who embraces singledom but is looking for true love is a foreign concept.
