Reading is an essential element in every person's life. As young children we learn to read at home and in school.
SIUE is helping to fulfill this essential element in young children's lives with the annual A Book In Every Home campaign.
Fifteen students from the SIUE Early Childhood Center came to the Goshen Lounge in the Morris University Center to help celebrate the kickoff.
Administrators, students, committee members and Edwardsville Mayor Gary Neibur were on hand to read to the children.
"Very few things are more important for young children," Neibur said.
He called the SIUE program an example of how people can help young people get started in life.
Committee member Colleen Potter said reading to children is vital.
The program is chaired by Kay Werner, manager of university services at the East St. Louis campus.
"The program is a tremendous program and I commend the leadership of Kay Werner," Neibur said.
Werner said there have been many changes since the
program started in 1995. She noted that more children are served by the campaign and that more people are now involved.
Monetary donations are now accepted, she added. The program gets support from the St. Louis Rams, the St. Louis Blues and local businesses. Committee members will be at the St. Louis Blues' game Saturday, March 27, to accept donations.
This year's goal is 4,000 books. To make a donation of a book or money, visit www.siue.edu/BOOKS.
A Book In Every Home has 51 committee members.
"They are a wonderful group to work with because they all share the same passion," Werner said.
Werner said the program's annual reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 2, in Birger Hall.
"There will be people reading, students dressed as their favorite book characters, recognition of major donors and food," Werner said.
