The National Football League and the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association have selected SIUE to participate in NFL College Flag Football.

SIUE is one of 32 schools to participate in the pilot of NFL College Flag Football.

"This is an unbelievable opportunity for us," Campus Recreation Assistant Director Chad Rodgers said. "This will be a wonderful chance for us to showcase SIUE and our programs here. We have never had a sponsor of this magnitude for our programs so we need to take full advantage and put our best foot forward.

"NIRSA and the NFL wanted to have a good mix of large, medium and small programs across the nation who have great intramural sports programs," Rodgers said. "They also wanted schools who are in close proximity to the NFL teams if at all possible." According to Rodgers, the NFL sponsorship might be an incentive for students to try something new.

"Students are very excited, which was evident from the increase in the number of teams that registered this year," Rodgers said. "The most teams we have had for flag football in the past was 23. Last year we had 19 and this year we have 30."

Rodgers said NFL College Flag Football is giving SIUE three sets of field markers, 25 NFL footballs and 375 player kits.According to Rodgers, St. Louis Rams players and cheerleaders will attend the SIUE Championship Bash at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Korte Stadium.

"We have not been told for sure how many of the St. Louis Rams and cheerleaders will be present at the Nov. 12 SIUE Championship Bash," Rodgers said.

Rodgers said the SIUE and Edwardsville communities are encouraged to attend the SIUE Championship Bash.
