Paying for college in Missouri became even more difficult this summer when Governor Jay Nixon announced two major budget cuts for higher education. Nixon decreased the Missouri Access grant funding by $50 million in July. Students who qualify for the grant will receive nearly $2,000 less per year if they attend a public university and almost $3,000 less per year if they attend a private university.

SIUE's student body eclipsed 14,000 this fall, marking a new high for student enrollment in the university's history.

Although official enrollment numbers will not be available until the completion of a 10-day census later this week, estimates show more than 2,000 new freshmen have enrolled, bringing the campus total to slightly more than 14,000, according to Narbeth Emmanuel, vice chancellor for Student Affairs.

The freshman student that was allegedly assaulted on Saturday, Aug. 21, is no longer enrolled at Webster University.

Webster, through its media relations department, has declined to comment on anything regarding the student.

The incident happened as the freshman jogged along the intersection of West Jackson road and Gray Avenue - nearly a mile and a half from campus.

Student Government approved three travel requests and four program requests Friday at SG's first meeting of the semester, and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Narbeth Emmanuel addressed SG in open forum.

Emmanuel informed SG that freshman enrollment was more than 2,000 students and there are more than 14,000 students enrolled in the university overall.

State pays SIUE

Despite the uncertainty of meeting payroll for the past few months, SIUE has received 99 percent of their state appropriations for the 2010 fiscal year.

SIUE Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift sent a memo Aug. 13 to faculty and staff regarding the school's budget situation.
